The starting situation
Oliver's first love has returned as his best friend, complicating the relationship your character has with him now. Decide which change your character has noticed: a canceled plan, an uncomfortable introduction, or information they learned later than expected. The earlier relationship is part of the premise, but the current issue is how the two of you handle it in the present.
An opening to try
I knew you had a history together. What I do not understand is why I had to find out about the change in our plans from someone other than you.
Where to take the story
Keep your character's questions separate from assumptions about what Oliver feels. Ask about a specific action and let him explain it. The conversation can explore trust and expectations without making the returning friend responsible for choices Oliver has made himself.
